The University of Vienna (represented by Max Perutz Labs, formerly Center for Molecular Biology), Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) of the University of Vienna and the VBC research institutes have started an initiative for PhD students, postdocs and group leaders at Campus Vienna BioCenter interested in gaining teaching experience.

If you are interested in teaching, below you find some information about this initiative and specific steps for you to follow:

/

  • What to expect

There are several (mostly practical) courses at Bachelor- and Master level. You are NOT expected to organize and run each course al by yourself; rather, you will be contributing to these courses in the capacity of an instructor or tutor.

Instructors (German: Lehrende) are responsible for

    • organizing the course program
    • planning and preparing specific activities for students (e.g., practical tasks, discussions, tests, homework, etc) taking into account didactic considerations and using suitable teaching methods
    • preparing course materials (e.g., practical scripts and protocols, electronic resources, etc)
    • directly interacting with and instructing students
    • giving students feedback
    • assessing (i.e., grading) students' tests and assignments.

One of the instructors acts as a responsible course head, or course organizer - this is usually a more experienced colleague, who supervises other colleagues, establishes learning outcomes, overall program and assessment criteria, sets up the date/time for the course, and takes over coordination. In each of the courses listed, you will initially help the responsible course head, but not act as one - until you gain enough experience.

Tutors are student employees at the University of Vienna whose task is to support individual courses. In practical courses tutors are usually responsible for preparative work (e.g., making key reagents, taking care of cells cultures, bacterial or yeast strains, ordering or preparing reagents and equipment, etc) and helping students throughout the course.

  • How much time does it take?

Before you start teaching, you will need to take a short CTL Basic Qualification course for new teachers (see below): it consists of three 3-4 hours-long units and a small writing assignment at the end.

Most practical courses are blocked for a period of two or three weeks: that means that the course starts in the morning (usually at 9 am) and runs throughout the day (typically until 3-5 pm) until the daily program is complete EACH DAY for 2 or 3 weeks. Computational courses usually take less time throughout the day, but run longer. Specific information about course schedule is announced in the course catalog called U:FIND and is defined by the responsible course head.

You should also reserve some time before the course begin (for preparatory work) and after course end (for giving feedback, grading homework, final assessment, etc).

  • Choose specific courses (in summer semester 2025)

We have identified a few Bachelor- and Master level courses where you could contribute to. The list of the courses with the specific time slots is described in two tables on Google Docs. If interested, please type your name and email in the free slots directly in the table.

  • Participate in the information meeting

Study program director Ivan YUDUSHKIN will talk to the interested PhD students, PostDocs and Group Leaders to describe what to expect and answer your questions.

  • Sign up for onboarding course

Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the University of Vienna organizes an onboarding workshop called "Basic Qualification for Junior Staff (STEM Disciplines)" for new teachers. In this workshop you learn about

    • planning courses
    • modern teaching methods
    • aligning course goals with teaching methods and assessment
    • preparing and grading assignments
    • how to handle difficult teaching situations
    • rules for teachers at the University of Vienna

You may sign up for the Workshop at this link. Next courses are available in November/December 2024 and in February 2025. When signing up, please also drop an email to the organizers at basisqualifizierung.ctl@univie.ac.at
