Plagiarism check

Preparation of the PDF Document

Plagiarism check can only be carried out if the thesis was properly registered (see Thesis registration). Before you upload the thesis to the plagiarism check server HoPla, please make sure that it meets all the formal requirements (also described in the University newsletter).

  • The uploaded PDF document and the hardbound printed version should be identical in content. Please print out the same pdf file which you have also uploaded to HoPla server
  • The plagiarism check must always be carried out BEFORE the printing and submission of the bound work
  • When saving documents as PDF file, please make sure that you create type PDF/A-1 or PDF/A-2 AND that you embed all used fonts into the PDF document. Further information can be found in the following links (Guidelines for making PDF/A files, Making PDF files in computer rooms, Further infos)
  • In case you have supplementary materials, which cannot be converted into PDF or the resulting document is larger than 40 MB, the University Library’s First Level Support will provide further assistance: e-theses.ub@univie.ac.at

Thesis upload

NEW: plagiarism procedure

  1. Start by uploading your thesis on u:space so that it can be checked for plagiarism. Once you have uploaded the document, you will receive an upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”).
  2. If any textual similarities are detected between your work and other texts, the study program management will examine whether it constitutes plagiarism. Please do not proceed with printing your thesis until you have received feedback (via email to your u:account) confirming a successful plagiarism check. The printed version must exactly match the electronically submitted version.
  3. After a successful plagiarism check, you must submit the hard-bound copy of your thesis. You will need to present the upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”) for this submission.

If the print version of your thesis includes multimedia attachments (e.g., images, videos, software, etc.) (see above), please be sure to state this when entering the abstract.

You may also optionally request an embargo on publication of your thesis (pursuant to Section 86 (2) UG 2002) -whereby the selection "offline" would also be sufficient - for a maximum of five years. The corresponding justification for the embargo must be submitted to the responsible SSC in a printed form (see step: Submitting the work).

You may choose to have your thesis be made accessible through the online repository of the University of Vienna Library. Upon submission of the declaration of consent, your thesis can be made available to the international audience while being protected from plagiarism through publication. It is also possible to restrict online availability without an embargo. Without the embargo, your thesis, however, can be borrowed from the library.

Important:

  • Erroneously uploaded theses can only be withdrawn once the plagiarism check has been completed and no plagiarism was detected
  • After thesis upload to HoPla server, correction of typos or changes in thesis layout are no longer possible and cannot be made in the printed version. Exception: it is allowed to change incorrect information in the title page of the printed version
  • If you have any questions or problems with the upload, the First Level Support of the University Library is available at e-theses.ub@univie.ac.at
  • Several students can jointly address the same topic provided that they obtain consent from the director of studies and that the performance of individual students can be assessed separately: every student involved has to write and submit the thesis separately, pursuant to §15 Section 6 of the Statutes of the University of Vienna

You will be informed by email as soon as your thesis has gone through the plagiarism check.
