Information on phased-out Master programs

Information to the focal area "Neuroscience"

As stated in the comment to the focal area "Molecular Neuroscience" in the new Master program "Molecular Biology" (066 865), this particular focal area only remains part of the curriculum until the Master program "Neuroscience" is introduced. This means that the focal area "Molecular Neuroscience" can no longer be studied from the winter semester 2023/24.

Students who started this major before October 1, 2023 (by completing compulsory courses such as VO and UE "Basics of Neuroscience") continue their studies in this focal group and must complete it by October 31, 2025.

For students of the old Master degree program "Molekulare Biologie" (066 834), from October 1, 2023 it is no longer possible to re-register for the alternative compulsory module group "Neurosciences". Students who have already started the alternative compulsory module group "Neurosciences" at this point in time are entitled to complete the alternative compulsory module group "Neurosciences" by October 31, 2024 at the latest.

The above is consistent with the minor changes to the curriculae "Molecular Biology" and "Molekulare Biologie", approved by the Senate Curriculum Committee.

It is not possible to switch to the new "Neuroscience" master's program without an admissions process. However, if you are admitted to the new master's program, relevant achievements already made in other programs will be recognized to the greatest possible extent.

Information to the Master programs "Genetics and Developmental Biology" (066 877) and "Molekulare Biologie" (066 834)

The existing Master programs “Genetics and Developmental Biology (877)” and “Molecular Biology (834)” are being phased out but will run until October 31st of 2024. Students registered in these programs (877 and 834) can do one of the following:

  • Continue your studies and take the courses as described in the corresponding curriculae. Make sure you complete your coursework and Master thesis and defensio before October 31st, 2024.
Selected courses from the “old” Master programs can be substituted by the equivalent courses from the new program – refer to your SPL and/or SSC if you have questions
  • You may choose to switch to the new Master program. In this case, you will become a student of the new Master program (“Molecular Biology (865)”) and continue your coursework in agreement with the new curriculum and its rules (including the new prerequisites, such as introductory modules MMB I and MMB II).
Your previously completed courses equivalent to those in the new curriculum will be recognized.
If you are a student of the Master programs 877 and 834 and want to switch to the new Master program “Molecular Biology (865)”, fill in and sign this form and send it via email to Prof. Angela Witte before October 31st, 2024. When you see in u:space that you have been switched to the new Master program, please inform Prof. Witte via email, and she will recognize the previously completed courses in the new Master study program
  • Students of Master programs 877 and 834 who do not complete their studies nor request switch to a new program before October 31st, 2024, will be automatically switched to “Molecular Biology (865)” by the Admissions Office after that date

Important! The additional courses prescribed upon your admission to your Master program (so-called Auflagen, or Ergänzungsprüfungen) will remain in the new program; you will still have to complete those courses.

If you are a student of another Master program (e.g., “Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Ecology and Immunobiology”, “Molecular Precision Medicine”, etc), and would like to join the new Master “Molecular Biology (865)”, you will need to apply for it via the regular admission procedures.

FAQs

  • Can I still join the “old” Master programs “Genetics and Developmental Biology (877)” or “Molecular Biology (834)”?
No; new students are no longer admitted to these two Master programs.
  • I am an Erasmus student signed up for the “old” Master programs “Genetics and Developmental Biology (877)” or “Molecular Biology (834)”; can I still take courses of these programs?
Yes; although the programs are being phased out, the courses are still available. In case a course is no longer available, there is/will be an equivalent course of the new program, which you can take and which will be recognized in the old program.
  • I have recently been admitted to the “old” programs “Genetics and Developmental Biology (877)” or “Molecular Biology (834)”; should I switch to the new one?
We would recommend doing so; you may, however, continue studying in your current Master program until they run out on October 31st, 2024 and switch at a later time point.
  • I have completed several courses in one of the “old” programs “Genetics and Developmental Biology (877)” or “Molecular Biology (834)”; will they disappear when I switch to the new one?
Your previously completed courses equivalent or relevant to those in the new curriculum will be recognized so that you do not lose ECTS credits. Select courses which are neither equivalent nor relevant to the new curriculum could be recognized in the elective module MMB IV
