Formal requirements
- German and English abstract/summary (maximum length: 250 words each) must be included. If thesis is written in a foreign language, a German summary must be included
- From page 7 onward, do NOT include any personally identifyable information or personal data in the thesis! Due to changes in data protection law, since February 23rd, 2016, the uploaded diploma, Master theses and/or dissertations are being transmitted (in a pseudonymised form) to plagiarism checking companies. The first 6 pages of the uploaded document (title page and acknowledgements) are automatically removed
- do NOT insert your CV into the thesis!
If you insist on including your CV into the thesis, you will need to sign an informed consent form - Please notice that images could also be subject to copyright and therefore require correct citations: when using images from third parties, the sources must be stated and the respective copyrights must be observed! In case of doubt, it is recommended to include the following text in connection with the source information in the work: "I have made a reasonable effort to identify image owner(s) and in order to attempt obtain their consent for the use of images in this work. Should a copyright infringement nevertheless become known , I request that you notify me."
- Please note that the text formatting is designed in such a way that binding in A4, portrait, printed on both sides, is possible (thus pay attention to the respective text indents for the binding with even and odd pages)
- For the title page of the thesis, there are concrete specifications regarding the layout and the data listed. To ensure that your title page is correct in terms of form and content, the system in u:space will create it automatically from your data.
Please do not use a title page you have created yourself in advance, as this will not be accepted during the formal check.
The office of study law (Büro Studienpräses) emphasizes the importance of the content and correct formatting of the title page of the thesis. Master theses with incorrect information or formatting of the title page may be rejected; in this case, you will need to re-upload the corrected version onto the plagiarism checking server (HoPla).
Special symbols in names:
If your name contains special characters (such as Ć Ø Š Œ Ň Ő Ů Ł Ñ etc.), which are not displayed on your study record (Studienbuchblatt), please contact us or draw our attention to that when submitting your examination record (Prüfungspass) or the Master thesis. Please additionally bring a copy of your passport and a printout where your name is correctly indicated. This is the only way to ensure that the certificates and all final documents are issued correctly.
Copyright and Image Usage
Information regarding copyright issues and usage and correct citation of images are available on the website of the Office of Study Law (Büro Studienpräses):
Please notice that referencing the source of the copyright-protected image may not be sufficient to justify fair use, especially if the image serves illustrative purposes only! Seek to obtain an explicit consent of the copyright owner or use the properly attributed "creative commons" materials.
NEW: plagiarism procedure
- Start by uploading your thesis on u:space so that it can be checked for plagiarism. Once you have uploaded the document, you will receive an upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”).
- If any textual similarities are detected between your work and other texts, the study program management will examine whether it constitutes plagiarism. Please do not proceed with printing your thesis until you have received feedback (via email to your u:account) confirming a successful plagiarism check. The printed version must exactly match the electronically submitted version.
- After a successful plagiarism check, you must submit the hard-bound copy of your thesis. You will need to present the upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”) for this submission.
